7:01 am

let's go back to the news of the day. we'll begin with developing news out of newark, where there is some police activity. they've been at the chevron gas station on jarris avenue right off jarvis avenue, rather right off highway 84. for the past hour. you can see the police tape up. here is a live picture from the scene we're working to find out exactly what happened here, but we can tell you there are no road closures in the area, so it's not affecting local traffic . but again, police presence, police activity here for several hours in newark at this intersection and at this gas station. stay with us here on mornings on two as we work together. new details. we're learning more about the fbi raid at oakland mayor shang tao's home and other raids that happened around the city. >> yeah, ktvu is here, live in the studio with the latest developments and breaking down what we know about the investigation so far. >> yeah, well, we saw fbi agents going in and out of mayor shang tao's home yesterday morning carrying boxes and bags from inside the home. the fbi has been tight lipped, though, about this investigation. only telling us that they were conducting,

7:02 am

quote, court authorized law enforcement activity. tao's home was not the only location raided yesterday, with the irs and the postal service involved as well. there are at least three other locations being investigated, all associated with the dong family. so who are people in the dong family? well, they own the recycling company cal waste solutions. there's a photo of the family from the cal waste website. the company is oakland's official recycling collector and the cal waste office on the embarcadero was raided yesterday. the dong family is heavily involved in politics and fundraising for politicians in both state and local government. they also helped sponsor and plan tao's trip to vietnam last summer to promote trade through the vietnamese american business association. two homes belonging to the family were also raided a home on view crest court and a home on skyline boulevard. at the view crest home, a neighbor told us he saw two people put in

7:03 am

handcuffs, but we still don't know the exact connection between these three locations being investigated, and mayor tao. >> all of these places that they have searched indicates that they have been working on an investigation for quite some time, and were able to convince a judge that they needed to go into all of these places. >> mayor tao's office has not responded to our request for comment, although she's been criticized by voters. this is the first time there has been an actual investigation. james. >> amanda, thank you. and some of oakland mayor shang tao's biggest critics say she is unfit to run the city. >> clean house, clean house, clean house, clean house, clean. yesterday people against the mayor in office stood outside her house on maiden lane just hours after federal agents raided her home. >> many were holding signs that said resign or recall. >> our mayor has failed us, we are here to demand that she

7:04 am

resign and stop embarrassing herself. and further embarrassing the city of oakland and further damaging the city of oakland. >> now, we still don't know what was at the center of that fbi raid, but of their many critiques, these people say the oakland mayor has already failed to crack down on crime. >> it is bad. it is bad, and it can be better if we get good leaders with honesty, integrity. >> earlier this week, the organizers of the campaign to recall mayor tao, said they'd gathered enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. it would be the first mayoral recall in oakland history. >> we're learning more about the mass shooting at lake merritt this week. police say 15 people were shot during a fight at a sideshow. the victims are between the ages of 20 to 30 years old with multiple injuries. when officers stepped in to provide first aid, police say the crowd turned against them. >> some of the individuals within the crowd began attacking

7:05 am

my officers. this type of behavior and level of violence is unacceptable. the opportunity to celebrate with your family and friends should never be marred by gunfire. >> very minimal use of force other than just, physical prowess to overcome resistance, police put out a citywide emergency call for backup to handle the unruly crowd. >> one woman was arrested for assaulting an officer. investigators are looking at social media posts to try and identify the shooters. >> all lanes of interstate 80 in oakland are back open this morning. that's after a shooting near the highway. police say they found a gunshot victim just about after 5:00 last night. the chp then closed all southbound lanes of 880 near 16th avenue. we are still working to learn the condition of the victim. and if any arrests have been made, that freeway was opened just about an hour after that shooting. flight attendants with american airlines are now preparing for a possible strike. that's after contract talks. before the contract talks broke down last night between union

leaders representing 28,000 flight attendants and american airline executives, american airlines offered them 17% raises earlier this month, but that was rejected. flight attendants say their pay isn't keeping up with inflation. a proposed measure to build up more affordable housing in the bay area could go before voters in november. the mayors of san jose, san francisco and berkeley came together to urge the bay area housing finance authority to approve placing the regional housing bond on the november ballot. oakland mayor was expected to attend if voters approve this measure, the authority would issue $20 billion in bonds to provide 90,000 new affordable homes. >> the lack of housing pushes people to the outskirts of this region. it clogs our freeways, it increases pollution. it results in poor public health outcomes and even increasing homelessness. >> those bonds would be paid off through increases in property tax for current home owners. all nine bay area counties fall

7:08 am

weekend. so over the course of tomorrow and the next day, we will continue to validate and improve those lines, continue to mop up as deep as we can into the fire area. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation and alameda county firefighter is back home from the hospital. >> he spent weeks recovering from battling a wildfire. fellow firefighters greeted brandon franco as he was released from santa clara valley medical center. he suffered multiple burns while fighting the corral fire near tracy on june 1st. his loved ones, including his dad, say they are touched by the outpouring of support for him and the family. >> it just warms my heart to see this the way that the fire department all got together and they healed my son. they they literally healed them. and i'm i'm an old guy, but i don't like to cry. but boy, they they bring

7:14 am

to move this forward. and that's why i think i and others are saying no to waymo. >> waymo released this statement in response, says, quote, this week's outcomes reflect california's already expansive authority to regulate autonomous vehicles, ultimately preserving the ability for californians to continue enjoying the benefits of autonomous vehicles. end quote. the san jose based electric air taxi maker moved one step closer to flying passengers. the faa has granted archer aviation a key certification that allows it to operate as an airline that carries passengers. the process has taken about two years. archer says its maker aircraft can fly up to 60 miles at top speeds of 150mph, 714 this morning, the california public utilities commission is rejecting a proposal from at&t to pull out of its obligations to provide landlines. >> at&t currently required to provide phone service to pretty much anyone who wants it. the company argues it needs to be relieved of those obligations in

7:15 am

order to try to focus on newer and more modern technologies. but the company's request received pushback, especially from rural residents who say their landline is often the only way to call for emergencies. >> our vote to dismiss at&t s application made clear that we will protect customers access to basic telephone service, no matter where customers live, their income or their access to other forms of communication. >> the commission did agree to review its rules surrounding basic service requirements, which were first adopted 30 years ago. the east bay's largest water district is investing nearly $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades to help protect its drinking water supply. east bay mud says the project will improve the water treatment process that serves about 225,000 customers in pleasant hill, walnut creek, san ramon valley and all those surrounding areas. some residents living along acenas ridge oppose the project, citing potential traffic and air pollution. the district's board is expected to vote on approving

7:16 am

an environmental impact report next month. >> time now is 715. let's get you caught up with the commute this morning, and overall, things are pretty good, except if you're driving in from the tracy area through the livermore valley. in the altamont pass, there's a new crash westbound 580 at grant line road. the second crash that you see here, closer to 84, is actually off the freeway. that's on gleason drive. so it's not leading to any slow traffic behind it. there is slow traffic on the san mateo bridge. you can see as people make their way over to the peninsula, no crashes on the peninsula. just a lot of people getting to the same place around the same time. and bay bridge traffic has cleared up quite a bit in the last hour. no problems getting onto the span. want to end with this picture of the golden gate bridge completely socked in with fog? it is some june gloom out there on the coast. steve paulson is here to tell us more about the forecast. >> steve, a lot of it, although it is going to burn off a little sooner here today. ali compared to yesterday. in case you missed

7:17 am

it, sometimes you get busy. i get it. you mean yesterday was the summer solstice? yes it was, it was at 1:51 p.m. today is also the june full moon. that will be just after 6:00 tonight. so summer began yesterday. today is the first full day and inland temps will bump up after a cool end of spring. san rafael, lafayette, palo alto, cupertino. i try and mix it up and not show the same towns every time. it's 82, 86, 84, and 84. i'm a little conservative on my forecast highs, but they will warm up a good ten degrees inland compared to some. there's still a lot of fog out there, although livermore now reports partly sunny. i think it's about gone. the fog also, you see it erode on the peninsula. that happens quickly. concord's already says sunny, so yesterday lasted a little bit longer, but still plenty to go around. but it will burn off the high is building in and temps will bump up. still getting a south southwest breeze for many though, especially in the oakland berkeley hills from san pablo bay out to the strait and delta. we'll see if that turns a little northerly. if it does, it could certainly warm up fast. now, travis is coming down. that's kind of the key was

7:18 am

up to 33 miles an hour early this morning, now 17. so the winds are still there, but they're still onshore for now. need that to turn a little northerly. it's been darn cold in the city. 48, 49 5051 normal low is 53. the key is the cold temps which are 49 to 50. a dramatic impact on the temps on the coast when the water temps are so cold. 5061 brentwood, 61 kelseyville all 50s for everyone else inland temps will warm up today. the warmest day will be tomorrow by by far. we'll probably get some upper 90s if you're far enough inland. probably 100, but i think coast and bay are just going to be the also rans out of this so cool pattern. the last couple of days is kicking out the highs building in, so we'll warm it up for a couple of days. looks like it backs off though on sunday. so full moon friday fog burns off sooner here a little drizzle. bayside. that's probably done for now. warmer inland 60s 70s by the water, 80s and low 90s inland. you guys maybe some pool and beach time on saturday. >> thank you steve. sports focus returns on sunday for our june episode airing at a new time

7:19 am

bait against donald trump. he gave a thumbs up sign as he boarded air force one to leave his home in delaware for camp david last night. it will be the president's headquarters for debate practice over the next few days. mr. biden's campaign won a coin flip to determine

7:23 am

podium positions. he will stand on the right side, but trump will have the final word in the debate. >> never had a presidential debate where the where, where it could have as volatile an impact on on the election. >> trump is going to be much more disciplined. i think this time he knows what's happened before that people are worried that trump's strength is more dangerous than biden's weakness. so i think we're going to see two candidates at their best, and that might leave the race exactly where your poll has it. >> a fox news poll has the race as tight as ever, with biden leading trump by two points. that's within the margin of error. their first debate is next thursday in atlanta. >> melinda gates says she will be voting for president biden. on a social media post, the philanthropist shared that her work on gender equality, requires her to work with leaders on both sides of the aisle. that is why she has avoided endorsing candidates in the past. but she says this time

7:24 am

it's different. gates warned trump's first term in office endanger women's health by compromising their safety. she credited president biden's actions on many issues, including his support for reproductive rights. donald trump's proposal to eliminate federal taxes on tips for waiters is now getting strong support from republicans on capitol hill. >> gop leaders in both the house and senate introduced bills this week that would make trump's tax plan a new federal law. however most democratic leaders oppose the plan. they're calling for an increase in the hourly minimum wage. instead, trump's plan would likely have a larger financial benefit to californians, since tipped employees here are paid $16 an hour. but in other states, it's as low to $2.13 an hour. one of the largest pro housing groups in california is supporting a solano county based initiative to create a new community with affordable housing. the group yes, in my backyard, says that while there are some concerns they support the overall vision, however, not everyone associated

with the group california forever is on board with the plan. the former group ceo, melissa breech, went on social media to speak out against it. she says the project should invest in existing solano communities instead of building new ones. anchorage julie haener has signed off officially from ktvu for the final time after 27 years here at channel two. >> it's just been an honor like and to have mark here look at who's here, mark and dennis and everybody that we work with. i'm so glad that that they're all here with me tonight. so it's just i, you know, it's just amazing. what do you do tomorrow. what do you do. >> right. dozens of ktvu channel two employees, both past and present, gathered in the news studio last night to say goodbye to julie and pay tribute to her remarkable career. >> julie first joined the ktvu news team in 1997, and she says her decision to retire was not an easy one. >> to be able to do this for such a long time in a place like the bay area, and we've had such a busy news week, there's been

7:26 am

so much news going on, it's like it's been really busy and to be a part of that, i think that's what i'm going to miss the most is when we have those breaking moments and we have those big moments and those big stories to be able to be in the middle of that and be involved and work together as a team. because it's not just about one of us. it's really about all of us and the people behind the scenes work so hard. >> julie's reunion with former ktvu anchor dennis richmond provided the most emotional moment of that evening. now you're going to make your drive. >> oh my gosh. oh my gosh, i can't believe you're here. >> julie says she now plans to spend some quality time with her family, do a little traveling to all of us here at ktvu channel two. wish her the very best. a little later this morning, we are live from pleasanton as mornings on two zip trips to a local beer oasis, a sneak peek

7:27 am

into a popular east bay taproom that carries beers exclusively from california. >> and the fbi raids a home connected to oakland mayor shang tao, sparking legal and political ramifications from that government investigation. the latest information on it coming up

let's go places. >> a historic night in birmingham, alabama. we are coming to. you live from rickwood field. looking back on a tribute, baseball fans will never forget. plus, mayor shengtao at the center of an fbi raid. we're breaking down what we know and how this investigation might affect her political career. >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> we're halfway through 7:00. welcome to mornings on two. i'm james torres, i'm allie rasmus. >> today is friday, june 21st. happy friday, happy zip trip friday zip trip friday. so that means we're going to learn a lot about the city of pleasanton later this morning. and beautiful pleasanton. how's the weather there this morning in bay area? >> it's about 53 degrees. i

7:31 am

think any fog is burning off. it won't be bad tomorrow, it'll be hot. but today i think they'll be just fine here for the morning. here, some low clouds making a pretty good surge here, but it's beginning to peel back a little. livermore had low clouds now. looks like it's about gone. palo alto already showing some partly sunny skies. there are still plenty to go around, though. you can see to the north. here we go up the napa valley again. also, marin county up 101 up to windsor. it's plenty there over san pablo bay out to napa, american canyon, hiddenbrooke looks like cordelia is probably the line and then solid on the san mateo coast down to santa cruz and the santa clara valley. but starting to disappear on the peninsula. we've seen that pattern on a lot since april. full moon, friday morning, overcast. i think the drizzle is about done. sunny earlier today as the basis of the fog are lower now, so they'll burn off sooner, which means 60 70s 80s to a few. it doesn't take much to jump up ten degrees on june 21st. all right, back to ali with an update on the traffic. >> we are going to go to the east bay east contra costa county where there is a new crash to tell you about southbound 680 at willow pass

7:32 am

road. not too much of a backup around it, but be aware of that. also, some slow traffic on westbound highway four, in the pittsburg bay point area. let's move ahead to show you that live picture so you can see for yourself traffic moving, although it is a bit sluggish. highway 24 in lafayette. things look good here. and you can see from the traffic camera that there's that intersperced fog and clouds and a little bit of sunshine peeking through. so burning off already, just as steve mentioned. 280 in san jose shows a nice view here. and no problems. a little bit heavier in the northbound direction past downtown at 731, and we continue to follow developing news out of newark. we are showing you the police presence at this chevron gas station on jarvis avenue, right off highway 84. the police have been here for several hours. a gas station employee tells ktvu that a person was involved in some sort of altercation with police, and that officers shot that individual police have not confirmed that to us yet at this

7:33 am

time. again, this is information coming from a witness at the gas station telling ktvu that information. but we will continue to gather more information on this. stay with us on mornings on two as we learn new details. >> 732 your time this morning, the baseball world bid farewell to the say hey kid. last night, the giants played the saint louis cardinals from rickwood field and willie mays and the legacy he left on the league and its fans was front and center. let's go out there live now. ktvu is greg lee joining us from alabama greg, that game was so much fun to watch on tv, but i imagine it must have been emotional to. >> yeah, incredible james to be here and feel the energy and spirit of this place. truly a remarkable sendoff to the say, hey kid, the mlb world as you said, converging on birmingham, alabama, a historic rickwood field behind me. the fans have long gone home. the teams have moved on to the next city. but the spirit of willie mays still very much here in birmingham, alabama, inside rickwood field, the oldest ballpark in america,

7:34 am

the longtime home of the birmingham black barons and where 17 year old willie mays began his professional career, the baseball world paid tribute to the leagues and honored to say, hey, kid, i could share a lot of things, but there it goes. >> you can't control it right now. i know for me, it's just too soon. yeah, so forgive me. to the public and the people, it's just too soon because it's an out of control feeling. >> giants great. barry bonds emotional when asked about his godfather's impact on his life. >> mays, his son michael said his dad would want this game to be a celebration of his life. >> i'm overwhelmed with, you know, joy and positive. i couldn't have done this without all the love that's, you know, he's sending me and all these fans and the giants and it's just a birmingham. it's really wonderful to see this kind of inspiration and joy and community coming together. >> giants manager bob melvin played here in the minors and

7:35 am

returned for the first time in four decades. he had a special message for his team about honoring mays in this poignant send off, what he meant to me and what he meant to the team, what he meant to the bay area, what he meant to baseball. >> he's he's a true icon in the world for giants outfielder mike yastrzemski, playing at rickwood is generational. >> his father played here in the minors. his grandfather, during an exhibition. mike said this is much bigger than him. it's about willie as much as it hurts to lose a legend like that, you know, we gained an angel and a saint above us to be here for this series. midway through the game, a striking sunset above rickwood field. and if you asked anyone that was willie smiling from above, no crying in baseball. >> keep your head up. know that he's he's he's watching you closer than ever from just a better vantage point, doing the same job. and, use this as an opportunity to do what they do here. >> a really incredibly powerful night. and again, a tribute to

7:36 am

willie mays. i have to tell you, in the 48 hours or so that we have been on the ground in birmingham, we have run into so many giants fans. they traveled to this game incredibly well, and all of them said all of this made more sentimental to see willie mays in this space, to send him off from this space and feel his energy here. guys, great. >> quick question for you. you know, rickwood is a stadium that i think very few people will ever get to experience here. if you had to compare it to oracle park, obviously a little bit of a show last night. but you know what, what kind of unique things about that stadium would you see that maybe you wouldn't see anywhere else, james, i don't think you can compare it to anything. i mean, built in 1910, the oldest ballpark in the country, and the amount of history here. and i will say, the folks at rickwood and the mlb did an incredible job of putting that history on display. you see that original entrance and that facade behind me? you walk and it is like truly a museum. i mean, there is a physical museum here, but

7:37 am

walking in, you see the faces and the names of the men who have come and played through here, through the leagues and worked so hard and dealt with the color line in baseball just to play the game that they love. and what an intimate setting. usually this houses about 9000 seats, but there were about 8100 because of adjustments they had to make for the broadcast, etc. and so these players and these fans were right on top of each other. and that is such a unique experience. and added to the fact that this is the first major league regular season game that has been played at rickwood, and what a game it was with all that was behind it. >> right on greg lee coming to us live from birmingham, alabama. thank you greg. >> well, new this morning. the u.s. supreme court has upheld gun restrictions for people who have restraining orders against them. and an 8 to 1 decision. the court determined that if a person has an active restraining order against them, any guns in their possession can be confiscated by law enforcement. it's a change from other recent

7:38 am

rulings by the supreme court, which had tended to side with gun rights advocates. justice clarence thomas was the lone dissenting vote, saying that the government doesn't have the right to remove second amendment rights from people who have not yet been convicted of a crime. we are waiting to hear from oakland mayor shengtao about an ongoing federal investigation. >> yeah, we watched as fbi agents went to her home and conducted what the bureau describes as a court authorized law enforcement activity. the agency says it couldn't explain further about the investigation, but fbi agents were seen coming in and out of the mayor's house for hours, also removing items and boxes and bags. it was among four locations searched by the feds. >> the other properties are affiliated with the zhong family, who owned the waste management company california waste solutions. we spoke with a witness outside the mayor's home who just happened to be a retired detective visiting oakland. >> the federal government doesn't force or obtain warrants into one's residence without

7:39 am
