BY TIM STANLEY World Staff Writer If they suffered from any delusions of guitar grandeur, then Dick Gordon was probably to blame. About 8 when he started taking guitar lessons from Gordon, Larry Shaeffer remembers how the Tulsa instructor would build up his students: "He told us we were all going to be big stars. And I think he believed it," Shaeffer said, laughing. "We're going to break into the big time any minute now' that was Dick's mantra.
He drilled that into thousands of students. And he kept that enthusiasm for years to the end." Several of Gordon's students would, in fact, go on to become "big time." But even for the many who didn't, few if any would hold it against the legendary guitar instructor. Shaeffer, a Tulsa-area music promoter and musician, said it's impossible to fully measure Gordon's influence for good. "He affected so many thousands of people positively. Not just students but their families, too." Richard C.
"Dick" Gordon Sr. died April 12. He was 93. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Friday at SpiritLife Church in Tulsa and will include a live medley of Gordon's favorite tunes by area musicians.
Rose Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The walls of Gordon's longtime Tulsa studio were literally layered in photos and news clippings, most featuring former students. Along with the likes of Pat Kelley, Sanford Clark, Jimmy Byfield and even Garth Brooks, many notable musicians had sought Gordon out to study with him. But also honored in this shrine to his musical influence were others doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, company executives and countless young kids. 5-7 LEE Gordon is set for 2 p.m.

Described once by former Tulsa World music writer John Wooley as "part philosopher, part mathematician, part psychologist and all musician," Gordon never stopped performing and staged his own shows, featuring him and his students, at auditoriums and venues around the city. Also, Gordon tried to be charitable with his talents.
Drapp said he used to go on Sunday afternoons to the Tulsa Boys Home and teach guitar to the young residents. He would also drop by nursing homes. And he always had a soft spot for students who couldn't afford lessons and would work something out with them, she said. From his hospital bed last week, during his final hours, Gordon was still itching for the "big time." Shaeffer said: "His last words to me he called me to his bedside and told me in a whisper were how when he got out of there, we were going to do a big show. 'We'll pack the Mabee he said."
